Code of Conduct Regarding Filming in the Library

Code of Conduct LibGuide page

After discussion with Kenya Johnson and Ella Peterson, the following protocol was drafted:

  • Filming of Police - Library staff will not intervene.  If anyone happens to be in the background of the film, we will not enforce this policy.  We do not want to disrupt the police investigation nor put employees in a potentially dangerous situation.

  • Filming spaces and users - Library staff will only respond to complaints.  Filming and photography happen at events and public spaces regularly on campus and there is not enforcement elsewhere (unless Intellectual Property is involved).  If we get a complaint from a user who did not wish to be filmed or someone was targeting them, we will follow up as we would with any other Code of Conduct complaint.

  • Filming of library staff - We will ask them to stop filming.  If they do not stop, we will ask them to leave the library.  If they do not leave the library, we will call UAPD for disruptive behavior.  While some staff wonder about whether we can ask the person to delete the video/photo, we do not think this will be easy to navigate and will likely escalate the conflict.

If a patron would like to speak to someone to request to film in the library, they can be directed to this form: Request permission to film and/or photograph.

  • This form is only for formal requests, such as student film projects, etc.
