Handling Questions About Reduced Library Hours

The following language can be used for complaints about our reduced library hours. There is language for general inquiries/complaints about our hours, and for complaints specifically about our weekend evening hours. If a customer wishes to provide specific feedback on this issue, please encourage them to write to us at library@arizona.edu or refer the chat to Ask Us:

General Questions about Reduced Hours:

Thank you for reaching out to us with your concern regarding our library hours.

The reduction to our hours of operation was one change, among others, that was made in order to assist the Libraries in meeting outstanding budget cuts. This decision was made in 2020 after careful analysis of library usage statistics and consultation with the student governance bodies the Associated Students of the University of Arizona (ASUA) and the Graduate and Professional Student Council (GPSC).

While our hours are reduced, we will have additional extended overnight hours during the last weeks of each semester to help students prepare for finals.

We take feedback from students seriously, and we worked to implement budget cuts in areas where usage was very low.

Questions about Reduced Evening Hours on Weekends:

We manage building hours based on usage from occupancy sensors throughout the buildings. Historically, Friday nights and Saturdays have very low occupancy. When faced with budget cuts, we worked with student governance on how best to meet the overall needs of students. We also worked with our colleagues within the Student Success District so that study space, including reservable rooms, are available up until 10pm on both Friday and Saturday nights in the Bear Down Building. This building is adjacent to (in between) the Main Library and Weaver Science-Engineering Library.
